Vintage 90+ YO Genuine Navajo Deerskin Leather Baby Moccasins, Handmade Beaded
This adorable little pair of baby moccasins should go to someone who loves these as much as I do.  I was fortunate enough to learn about a wonderful Navajo grandfather (with the amazing name of "Josiah Ezekiel Daniel Cowboy") who was downsizing so he could move in with his grandson (my friend).  I spent a wonderful afternoon on the nearby reservation (I live on the edge), sitting by an outside firepit, gorging myself on firebaked frybread slathered with fresh honey,  I had the joy of listening to the amazing life stories of this Navajo native who has lived his entire life on the reservation, and seen and heard things that you and I have probably only read about in books. He shared the stories of Pow-wows, seeing shapeshifters and (yes) Bigfoot, along with learning how to read and speak English when he was almost 30 years old.  His older brother was one of the WW2 code talkers.
This gentleman has never used a computer, never used a cell phone or had a T.V.  Until about 10 years ago, he lived without power or running water.  (Yes, reservations are STILL like this.)  He would chop his wood for heat and cooking, and drive to the water source to fill up barrels and tote water back to his small home.
After hearing his life story, I offered to list some of his items and give him the money -- so I'm keeping my promise and listing his precious items.
Anyway...he wore this pair of moccasins when he was a baby. His grandfather shot the deer and tanned the hide, and his grandmother made these moccasins and did the beadwork on them. He had kept them in a safe place for his life.
Here in northern New Mexico we have a LOT of red soil and, when I was photographing these moccasins, the right one had some red dirt in it.  I decided to leave some of the dirt in so whomever is fortunate enough to purchase them will have a piece of beautiful New Mexico, an ancient culture that is fading, and the energy of a grandpa who's almost a century old.
