    Description

This is a beautiful example of West Coast indigenous craftsmanship. The pole is of older stock and relatively primitive in appearance which actually makes it very attractive. These are the types of poles from smaller communities in the northern regions of British Columbia where there wasn’t all that much contact with the outside world. The artists used whatever was available to them which probably wasn’t a lot. I’m sure sandpaper and a large variety paints were something that artisans could only dream about in the 1940’s and 60’s. None the less these pieces tell a larger story than the modern pieces of today. They are more rare because they had to have survived for this long under critical conditions during the40’s, 50’s and 60’s, the era of residential schools and family separations. But this one made. Thank goodness.
