This rawhide shield is a shield like those that were used in battle, dances and ceremonies by many Native American tribes. Made of moose hide - it is very tough - would help deflect arrows and knives in battle. Rawhide is quite rugged in general - moose rawhide is one of the thicker and stronger hides.
This is a smaller shield, a size meant to hold in one hand to "shield" you from close attacks while you used your other hand to fight with your own knife. 12.5" long and 11" wide, with outer sides rising up 5". It is about 1/2" in thickness. Oblong and curved outward at the center it would provide maximum protection for your hand, arm, chest.
Native American shields were painted or decorated with designs and items meaningful to the warrior. Here Jack has painted this red and white with an outlined black bearpaw/track in a red circle). He has attached an arrowhead and a small medicine bundle of red trade wool. It is tied and there is medicine inside - (sage I think) Trade wool wraps the rim of the shield. On the back the rawhide has several holes around the edges where you can either attach a rope or a wire to hang this - or you can configure a rope or leather strap so you can hold it like a shield..... an X design works well for this ... wrapping around the center as well.
Jack has signed this and put the name "Warrior's Pride" on the back ... He made this in 2013 and just now decided to part with it.
It is a great piece for display - or can be used as part of your regalia.
After losing contact with Jack for a few years, in a recent visit I was able to get some of his current moosehide items. There are a few more medicine bags, 3 pairs of moccasins and some tiny moccasin pairs that are decorative as well as this moose rawhide shield. Moosehide shields are items I had previously gotten from Jack and they are quite unique and difficult to find.
MicMac/Mi'kmaq (USA spelling/Canadian spelling) are a tribe that has dual citizenship by virtue of their tribal rights. Jack Ginnish resides in Big River, New Brunswick, Canada and Belfast, Maine, USA. Last 2 photos of slide show are of Jack defleshing/dehairing a moose hide and of him in his competitive traditional dance regalia. - Note that he wears a small deerhide medicine pouch with his traditional dance regalia in that photo.
