Hi and thanks for having a look at my listing!Today's is something special.
Vintage Le Domino Concert Model No. 127 Ukulele
This is special because it was bought new by my girlfriend's grandfather in the 1920's. His name was John Carl Davis, and you can see his pride of ownership in his rock star signature on the back of the uke. I think it reads, "JCL Davis" but you can make your own determination.
Everything appears to be original, including the case, the steel capo, and the humidifying sponge which was added when he moved to Arizona in 1962.
There are some blemishes. The domino decal on the third fret has seen better days, but is still secure. The top is cracked. And the binding has failed at the bottom of the top, the separation of the top from the side can be seen in the photos. There is also a crack in the back of the uke.
The good news is that everything is still there and can be repaired! The bridge is still secure, and the finish still looks great, including the decals.
There does seem to be a maker's mark or serial number of sorts stamped in ink on the interior of the uke. There are some numbers there in my mind, but they are a bit elusive. I tried to photograph them, if you need more please let me know.
I am selling this on behalf of my girlfriend's mom, as she isn't savvy with the ways of online selling.
Any questions you would like answered, I'm happy to answer what I can. What I can't, I'm happy to ask her if that would help.
It will be well packed and insured for purchase price. I might even use some wood to secure its safe arrival.
Here is some background from the web:
Made in Chicago, of well seasoned birch finished in jet black with white celluloid binding, black lacquer with decals, poplar neck, black chipboard case.
This Le Domino Concert-sized Ukulele is a late 1920's classic. The J.R. Stewart company of Chicago originally built Le Domino branded guitars, mandolins, soprano and tenor ukes, and banjo-ukes in the 1920's, and the very successful brand passed to Regal in the early 30's after Stewart was forced out of business following a disastrous deal with Lyon & Healy. The Le Domino ukuleles were by far the best seller, and it's easy to see why.
This example is in the rarer large Concert size (the majority were standard soprano). Sold at a moderate price, Le Domino instruments are fairly well made (though not to the level of a Martin) and very flashy looking with a black, white, and gold "tuxedo" look. The sleek ebony finish is highlighted by white ivoroid binding on the top, back, and fingerboard. Tiny Domino decals adorn the fingerboard at positions 3, 5, 7, and 10, with the dominoes cleverly numerically designating the position. A larger Domino decal adorns the top below the bridge, and a gold soundhole ring festooned with small dominoes completes the top ornamentation. The headstock carries a gold leaf script "Le Domino", and has a distinctive JRS logo on top (J.R. Stewart).
Dimensions: approximately 22 1/2" by 7 7/8" wide at lower bout.
Scale length is about 14".
