    Description

Circa 1950’s HOPI Brocaded Dance Sash # 3 - Katsina / Kachina Ceremonial Regalia
    Two panels consisting of
    finely
hand-woven of cotton yarn and decorated using brocade weaving method with weft brocading of red, green and black aniline dyed wool illustrating the ‘Broad Face’ Katsina (Kachina).
This is an excellent sash and notably larger than most.  Probably dates to about 1950.  Probably commercial cotton.  The work on the brocade is nicely handled.  The wool looks homespun.  As is usual, it is woven in two panels which are joined with green yarn.  Each panel measures about 44 inches long and nearly 12 inches wide, not counting the fringe.  There is minor bleeding of color on the yarn, presumably from use.  It also has the initials NNVW (looks like that) on the back side of one panel in pink embroidery and in green on the backside of the other panel.  It has the typical staining and body paint transfer from use.
Normal wear, tear and losses commensurate with age of artifact.
