    Description

There is a beautiful heart design on the front of this traditional tanned moosehide medicine pouch by Jack Ginnish, Mi'kmaq/MicMac ..Canadian/USA).  The design is of black, red, yellow and white beads - these are the colors of the 4 directions and are also the 4 colors of man in the Mi'kmaq belief.   The moose leather is very thick, soft and supple.   This is an old style drawstring pouch with beadwork at the ends of the drawstrings.  For those who like to wear their medicine pouch under their shirt/blouse - this one doesn't have fringe.  I have heard a few saying that fringe can "tickle".  Others might prefer no fringe just because they like the minimalist look here.....  If you want to wear this around your neck you will need to tie it to some sort of neck strap or chain.
This is about 2.5" across and 2" high.   It spreads out to put medicine herbs/plants or whatever inside then close.  Top spreads to about 3.5" in diameterThe drawstrings would attach to a belt, backpack, purse or tie onto a neck strap.
After losing contact with Jack for a few years, in a recent visit I was able to get some of his current moosehide items.  There are a few more medicine bags, 3 pairs of moccasins and some tiny moccasin pairs that are decorative as well as one moose rawhide shield.  Moosehide shields are items I had previously gotten from Jack and they are quite unique and difficult to find.  Look for all these in this store, I will be listing them all over the next several days.  (When I am done, I will try to remember to remove this from listings so you will not need to watch for me to list more, you will know all are listed)
MicMac/Mi'kmaq (USA spelling/Canadian spelling) are a tribe that has dual citizenship by virtue of their tribal rights.  Jack Ginnish resides in Big River, New Brunswick, Canada and Belfast, Maine, USA.  Last 2 photos of slide show are of Jack defleshing/dehairing a moose hide and of him in his competitive traditional dance regalia.  -  Note that he wears a small deerhide medicine pouch with his traditional dance regalia in that photo.
This and other medicine pouches can be worn around the neck, tied to a belt, or a larger bag or backpack.  Medicine pouches are often worn by Native Americans and Indigenous Canadians under their shirt/blouse/dress - at all times.  The contents vary with individual preference.  Inside a medicine pouch you might find traditional medicines in smaller bags or wraps, stone fetishes and crystals, dry plants for smudging, plants used as tobacco; smoking any of them was ceremonial only  - or today a pouch might have more modern medicines, a bit of hidden "mad money", or even jewelry.  Medicinal plants very with each area of the country.  Here in the Northeast they include flagroot, white pine, white cedar, red willow, bladderwort, cow parsnip, comfrey, chagga and so many more.  - Plants for smudging just about anywhere
include sweetgrass, cedar, sage and actual tobacco.
    Plants for smoking
include actual tobacco, kinnikinnick, red willow etc.
