    Description

    We are offering a
    RARE
    Original
    Publication of
    The Campaign Book of the Democratic Party.  The Republican Party Reviewed.
    Washington, D. C.:  R. D. Polkinhorn, Printer, 1882.
    The Republican Record of the Forty-Seventh Congress, Revealing their Wreckless Advance Toward-----Centralization and Imperialism; Excessive Taxation; Protection of Monopolies; Extravagant Appropriations; Degradation of American Labor; Neglect of American Citizens Abroad; Corruption of the Civil Service; and Jobbery and Hypocrisy.  We have attempted to merely touch on the many subjects in this record which are well fleshed-out in the report - packed with data, details, statistics and speeches by Congressmen.  The Democratic Party brought out that, with the age of industrialization and great wealth, the Republican Party had changed dramatically since the time of Abraham Lincoln.
    In this record of the 47th Congress, in the section
    "Centralization and Imperialism",
    the Democratic Theory of Government is described as being based on Republican President Garfield's doctine expressed in his inaugural speech,
    "This decree does not disturb the autonomy of the States, nor interfere with any of their necessary rights of local self-government; but it does fix and establish the permanent supremacy of the Union".
    A comparison is made to the Republican Theory of Government which was "of the Hamiltonian order".
    The form of government proposed by Alexander Hamilton as expressed by him was, "All communities are divided into the few rich & well-born and the 'mass of the people'.  The people are turbulent and changing; they seldom judge or determine [what is] right.  Give, therefore, the rich and well-born a distinct permanent share in the government.  They will check the unsteadiness of the "mass of the people" and will ever maintain good government."
    According to this publication, this was the belief espoused by the Republican Party.
    In this record, there is a section on
    Contested Election Cases
    with actual testimonies from voters;
    Republican
    Gerrymandering; Excessive Taxation - showing a steady increase in taxes from 1878-1882 while Republicans were in power; Reduction of Internal Revenue -
    providing Relief for Wealth - None for Labor.  This section includes many details on how taxes were collected and from what sources;
    Sherman's Pet Bank,
    and much, much more.  It gives examples of Railway legislation and other Republican legislation granting public lands to corporations -
    "turning the bountiful gift of nature to mankind over to the grasping millionaire and the plundering spoilsman and using the power of Government to drive off the laboring man from the fields enriched by his labor..."
    The section on the Democrats' record prior to the 47th Congress cites laws they passed such as laws benefiting disabled veterans, neglected American citizens abroad, and widows and children of soldiers, to name only a few.  It shows how Republicans blocked passage of many laws proposed by the Democrats which they believed was good for the common man and working class.
    CONDITION: Book is complete, clean inside, no tearing.  Covers show soiling, and a little edge-chipping.
